Expert Tips for Cleaning Hard-to-Reach Places

Sections

After spending a few hours cleaning your home, it’s frustrating to spot a dust bunny lurking in the corner or a cobweb on the top of your chest of drawers. These are only some of the spaces in your home that are hard to see and even harder to reach, but they do need to be cleaned often. How do you clean hard-to-reach spots?

Commonly Missed Spots That Gather Dust and Grime

Some of those spots in your home that gather dust and grime are simply overlooked. Others are intentionally ignored because they’re too difficult to clean.

Some of the most commonly missed spots are ceiling corners, light fixtures, ceiling fans, the tops of cabinetry and tall furniture, and behind appliances. Other areas include baseboards, air vents and beneath sofa cushions.

Tips for Staying on Top of Hard-to-Reach Areas

When you let dirt and grime build up in hard-to-reach areas, your home simply isn’t as clean as you need it to be. Germs and allergens build up, impacting the health of your loved ones.

In addition, grime has a negative impact on the life and performance of appliances and electronics. Staying on top of hard-to-reach areas is easier to do when you have the right tools for the job. To avoid overlooking any areas, incorporate these tasks into your weekly or deep cleaning sessions as a matter of routine.

Must-Have Tools for Tight and Tall Spaces

While some spaces in your home are easy to overlook on cleaning day, others are simply out of reach. They require you to maneuver into odd positions, get a ladder or move furniture. Having the right tool for the job takes the hassle out of reaching tight and tall spaces. If you don’t already have them, consider investing in these essentials:

  • A flat duster with a microfiber head
  • A full array of vacuum cleaner attachments
  • An ostrich feather duster
  • A long-handled duster

Behind and Under Furniture

The spaces behind and under furniture are usually cramped. You often can’t reach your hand in the space. If possible, use a vacuum attachment to tackle these areas. If your attachment won’t fit, use a flat duster.

High Ceilings and Corners

Dust bunnies lurk on ceilings and in corners. With lower ceilings, you might be able to reach them with a long vacuum cleaner attachment or a broom. However, taller spaces may require a long-handled duster.

Window Tracks, Blinds, and Curtain Rods

Cobwebs and dust bunnies lurk on curtains and curtain rods. Use a long-handled duster to reach the upper areas easily. Window tracks can get grimy with insect remnants, dust and other debris. Use your vacuum’s attachment to remove the loose debris. Then, use soapy water and a toothbrush to scrub off stubborn grime.

Behind Appliances and Cabinets

When dusting behind appliances and on top of cabinets, the last thing you want is to move the dust around. That just makes a bigger mess. Instead, the goal is to capture the dust.

Wrap a microfiber cloth around the handle of a broom or a mop to make a makeshift, long-handled duster with a slim profile. Microfiber cloths capture dust particles, which enables you to clean these spaces easier and more efficiently.

Tight Bathroom and Kitchen Gaps

That space behind your toilet is tough to reach and gets incredibly filthy. So does that tight area between the stove and the cabinets. You’ll inevitably have to do some stretching and bending to clean behind the toilet, but you can make lighter work of this icky project by using a handled scrubber.

To clean the sides of your stove, you typically have to carefully move the stove out of its nook to access it. While it’s pulled out, remember to wipe down the side of the cabinets.

When It’s Time to Call in Professional Help

Each home is different. In some homes, you seemingly have to be an acrobat to clean all of the nooks and crannies properly. If you simply can’t reach some areas or there are truly grimy areas that you don’t want to touch, it’s time to call a pro. Professional cleaners have the tools and techniques required to deliver an impeccably clean home at every visit.
