How to Clean a Gas Stove Top

Sections

Your gas stove top is subject to food crumbs, sauce spills, grease splatters and more. The heat from the burners will undoubtedly bake the mess on, making it tough to remove. When the grime remains on the stove top after multiple uses, the baked-on residue becomes increasingly challenging to remove. How do you clean a gas stove top?

Importance of Maintaining a Clean Gas Stove Top

Both electric and gas stove tops can emit unpleasant burning smells when spills and food fall on them. A gas stove top, however, has an open flame. This can increase the possibility of a cooking-related fire. In addition, when the debris accumulates on the stove top’s burners, the heating mechanism can stop working altogether.

How Often Should You Clean Your Stove Top?

The best time to address food spills and splatters is as soon as they happen. However, you shouldn’t clean the stove top when the burners are on or while the stove is still hot. Wait for it to cool down before wiping it clean after each use. While your stove requires daily attention, it also needs a deeper cleaning on a weekly basis.

Step-by-Step Cleaning Process

Before cleaning your gas stove top, spend a few minutes reviewing your owner’s manual. If you cannot locate it in your home, you can search for it online using the model number. While the techniques and steps vary somewhat from model to model, these are the general steps to clean a gas stove top.

Removing Grates and Burner Caps

To get started, remove the grates, and soak them in soapy water. Use a grease-cutting dish soap. Once the grates are removed, you can access the burner caps. These are the round surfaces found in the center of the burner. Typically, you can just pick these up. Place them in the soapy water as well. Let them soak while you clean the rest of the stove top.

Cleaning the Stove Top Surface

You’ll have easier access to your entire stove top surface when the grates are removed. Use a dry cloth to remove all of the loose debris on the stove top. Then, spray the stove top with an all-purpose cleaner. If you’re dealing with stubborn messes, make a cleaning paste using a few drops of grease-fighting dish soap, two parts baking soda and one part distilled white vinegar.

Apply the paste to the stove top. All this paste to sit while you work on the grates and burner caps. When you return to the stove top, the grime will be easy to wipe away. Remember to rinse off the stove top using a clean, damp cloth.

Scrubbing Grates and Burner Caps

In some cases, simply soaking the grates and burner caps in soapy water will make it easy to scrub off the baked-on mess. However, if some messes are stubborn, apply your paste to these parts. After allowing the paste to sit for roughly 15 minutes, you can easily scrub the remaining mess off. Rinse them clean with water, and set them aside to dry.

Cleaning Burner Heads and Ports

When you remove the grates and burner caps, you can access the burner heads. These must be clean in order for the gas flame to consistently heat your pot or pan. These must be cleaned with care to avoid damaging them. Always defer to the owner’s manual when cleaning these areas.

Some burner heads and ports can be cleaned with a toothbrush and vinegar. Gently scrub them. To deal with clogged ports and holes, use a fine needle to remove the debris.

Reassembling the Stove Top

Give the various components time to air dry before reassembling the stove top. When everything is dry, replace the burner caps first. Then, slide the grates back into place. Turn on the burners. The flame should be disbursed evenly. If not, you need to readjust the burner caps.

How Do You Get Baked on Grease Off a Gas Stove Top?

In some cases, the baked-on food is too difficult to remove with these methods. Apply the paste to the stubborn areas. Moisten a cloth, and place it over the paste. Allow this to sit undisturbed overnight. In the morning, the baked-on mess will be easy to scrub away.

  • Give your stove top a more thorough cleaning on a weekly basis.
