Every traveler has a list of cool places to visit, both locally and sometimes internationally. If you’re looking to add to your own travel list, look no further than Boston, Massachusetts. Not only is Boston one of the most historic cities in America, but it is also one of the most beautiful. There are many reasons to make this stunning city a worthwhile destination in New England, but we’ve found that there is a lot more that can make it worth your time. Here are just five reasons you should schedule a visit to Boston.
1. Living History
The most obvious reason we think Boston is so cool is the amount of history within the city. Boston is considered the birthplace of the American Revolution and there is proof of it everywhere you look. While there’s no tea left in the harbor, you can still see several locations that played major roles in the early days of the formation of the United States. Places like Paul Revere’s house, the Boston Common, Old North Church, and the Bunker Hill monument are all popular historic spots and they can all be seen as part of the famous Freedom Trail. Be sure to book a spot on a Freedom Trail tour if you plan to visit so that you don’t miss a single site.
For sports buffs, check out Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox and the oldest baseball park in the country. We highly suggest catching a game here during baseball season, but you can also tour the park during the off-season so that you have a chance to see the history all year long. Boston has no shortage of history, but you’ll have to see it for yourself to catch everything on the list.
2. New England Food
You may not consider Boston to be a foodie’s dream, but you would be sorely mistaken to miss out on dining in and around the city. Stopping by Faneuil Hall is an absolute must as it is home to the Quincy Market, a dining hall that boasts 18 restaurants and 35 different dining options in the main colonnade. There is no question that you will be able to find something to suit any taste buds, but chowing down on some New England classics is an absolute must. You can find amazing variations of clam chowder all around Boston along with lobster rolls and a huge variety of seafood options, some even straight from the harbor!
Don’t forget to also indulge in some sweet desserts and pastries when you’re here. The famous Boston Cream Pie is served nearly everywhere, but if you want the genuine real deal you’ll have to stop for a meal at the Parker House Hotel restaurant which is the birthplace of Boston’s favorite delicious dessert. No matter where you go in the city, you’ll find some of the best meals you’ve ever had.
3. Beautiful Greenspaces
It can be hard to find greenspaces in many modern cities, but Boston has no shortage of them. One of the city’s best-known public parks is the Boston Common, which has been in use since 1634 as a variety of public spaces including public farmland, gathering spaces, and even WWII victory gardens. The Boston Common is one of the most famous public parks in the country and has so much to offer all year, including a pond for ice skating during the winter.
In the spring you can see the blooming flowers in the Public Garden, which is both beautiful and historic as America’s oldest public park. Both the Boston Common and the Public Garden are part of what is known as the Emerald Necklace. The Emerald Necklace is a chain of connected parks and greenspaces that wanders about seven miles through Boston from the Boston Common to Franklin Park. These parks allow for a peaceful and shady escape from the busy city life around them.
4. Museums for Everyone
There is no shortage of opportunities to learn and admire beauty while you are in Boston. Museums are the best ways to do this, and Boston is home to a whopping sixty museums of varying subjects. For art lovers of any kind, there are institutions like the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Institute of Contemporary Art which all house massive collections of art from around the United States and pieces from around the world. For science and nature lovers there’s the Museum of Science, the Harvard Museum of Natural History, and the MIT Museum.
There is no better way to learn about the innovations of history and the natural wonders of the world than through these museums. Of course, for those who are interested in America’s history, there are a number of museums included on the Freedom Trail that are worth checking out. You can also stop by the JFK Presidential Library and Museum and the JFK National Historic Site, the home where the country’s 35th president grew up. As we mentioned, there is no shortage of opportunities the learn in Boston so check out at least a few of these incredible museums.
5. Seasonal Beauty
New England is known for its coastal beauty and stunning displays of autumnal color as the seasons change. If you don’t believe the pictures you’ve seen, then come and see the beauty for yourself. Boston is one of the most amazing places to experience each and every season as they come and go. Spring in Boston is full of floral blooms around the many parks and the lively colors really bring the city to life.
Floral scents can be caught in the air at just the right times and the birdsong in the larger parks can make for an exceptionally peaceful afternoon of picnics or other outdoor activities. If you’re anything like us, you’ll love the weather that comes with the cooler seasons and you’ll jump at the chance to capture the vibrant oranges, reds, and yellows of the leaves on camera.
