If you’re in need of a guide for pre-guest holiday cleaning, look no further. Here is our list of cleaning tasks to accomplish in each room before you deck the halls.

Living Room

Your guests will be spending time with you and others in the living room, so you’ll want to spend the most time in here. Make sure you’re thorough and critical if you really want to impress your guests this year.

  • Dust the high-up and hard-to-reach areas
  • Clean the windows  and mirrors
  • Wash your throw blankets
  • Spot clean your carpets and furniture
  • Vacuum thoroughly, especially around the Christmas tree
  • Wipe the coffee table, fireplace mantle, shelves, and side tables free of dust
  • Rearrange and fluff the couch pillows
  • Tidy up any kid or pet toys
  • Set out coasters on all tables

Kitchen

No holiday is complete without a delicious feast freshly prepared in the kitchen. Make sure yours is clean and ready for a flurry of activity before your guests arrive so that everything goes as smoothly as possible.

  • Wipe down and disinfect high-touch surfaces and countertops

  • Dust the light fixtures
  • Clean the mirrors
  • Clean the shower, tub, toilet, and sink
  • Wipe down and declutter counters
  • Wash bathmats and shower curtains

Dining Room

  • Sweep the front steps free of leaves and debris
  • Wipe door handles
  • Clean windows and mirrors
  • Clear space in closets for guests’ outerwear
  • Set aside space for guests’ shoes

Outside

Allow for easy arrival and departure for your guests by tidying up, prepping for winter weather, and providing plenty of light so they can see where they’re going at night. We’re hoping for a white Christmas, so make sure you’re ready for snow.

  • Make sure your holiday lights are on and working
  • Make sure the easy-to-reach windows are clean
  • Shovel and treat your sidewalk and walkway to the front door if it is icy
  • Make sure your doorbell and front door lights work
  • Put away tools or lawn equipment
  • Prep your driveway for any risky weather conditions
  • If you’re guests will be parking in the street, let your neighbors know (It’s polite!)

Finishing Touches

You can clean your fruits and vegetables by filling your sink with cold water and mixing in ¼ a cup of hydrogen peroxide and allowing your produce to soak for a few minutes.

  • Clean the baseboards
  • Wash or steam the curtains
  • Make sure you’ve added festive decor in every room
  • Light candles, use room sprays, or turn on scent diffusers
  • Light the fireplace for a cozy evening
